A Brief Description of myself

I am a User Experience Designer that lives and works in Austin, TX, and have been a part of several high-profile online initiatives in several capacities for clients such as HP, Waste Management, Reliant Energy, HBO, Sony Pictures, and Mattel. A little over eleven years ago, I gave up on my dreams of being a moderately unsuccessful comic artist and animator /waiter and decided to help build the internet instead; a decision that has led me through the trenches of web design and programming to a passion for user experience and common sense methodologies for interactive media. Having previously worked with a variety of Houston-based agencies, including Six Foot Studios and FKM, and IDEA, in 2010 I finally moved back to the city nearest and dearest to me- Austin, TX- and took a position at HomeAway doing a combination of UI development and UX work. Recently I joined SpredFast- another Austin startup with a focus on social media for large businesses- as a UX Architect.
About this site
Since 2001, FoolishStudios has been the online portfolio and occasional business portal of me, Michael Dunn. This is the seventh version of the site and the second to utilize wordpress. All custom html and css code was done by hand using Coda. The curious name is a reference to a comic book character that I created back in High School— The Fool.
What I can do
When I’m not designing or coding, I help manage and write for Gaming Trend, a gaming news and reviews site. I also help manage the marketing efforts of my wife’s artistic endeavors. My biggest goal this year(again) is to reintroduce some analog into my digital world, and get back into painting and drawing.
While my main passion lies in designing and coding standards-based websites, I have managed to pick up quite a diverse skillset over the years. This includes:
- Public speaking
- Information architecture
- Usability Testing and documentation
- Identity graphics and logo design
- 2D animation
- Illustration
- Video editing and production
- Conceptual design and high-level brainstorming
